The Rising Costs of Education

It’s no secret that education costs have shot through the roof, but what is driving such steep increases? Just as we’re settling into post-pandemic life, bam, we’re hit with an 8.5% inflation rate.

Let’s take a look at the factors contributing to education price hikes.

Pandemic Closures

The pandemic has played a considerable part in rising education costs as the closure of universities led to the loss of hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue. Major revenue streams from college sports, campus dining and dorms evaporated overnight.

It’s no surprise that tuition costs continue to climb as universities struggle to make up for such significant losses in revenue.

Inflation rates are at a 40-year high. This means the value of your dollar is worth significantly less than it did just a year ago. Consumers are feeling the decline as store shelves are lined with smaller packaging at an increased price.

As the cost of goods and services increases, it can be hard to justify an investment in yourself. Thankfully, those who want to improve their future by learning new skills have options.

Education Alternatives

When it comes to pursuing a digital skills career, investing in yourself is smart. There are many options when it comes to learning new skills.

Traditional 4-year institutions continue to provide a path to success for many. However, education is not a one-size-fits-all approach to a new career.
As technology continues taking industries by storm, the demand for individuals and workers with digital skills and competencies is skyrocketing. The NC State Digital Skills Bootcamps provide you with all the tools you’ll need to successfully launch your exciting new career in less than a year.

High Demand for Digitally Skilled Workers

If the pandemic taught us one thing, it’s that anything is possible! Employers have come around to the benefits of an at-home workforce. Employees value how they spend their time, dividing it more favorably between work and life.

In light of how much can be achieved, employers and employees alike agree flexibility is the key. The NC State Digital Skills Bootcamps provide you with the job-ready skills you need to increase your earning potential in a fulfilling career.

Companies are looking for individuals with real-world application skills, forgoing the requirement for a 4-year degree. With 76% of global workers reporting they are unequipped for the future of work, there is a higher than ever demand for digitally skilled workers.

The gap between skilled employees and open jobs presents an opportunity. Companies worldwide are rapidly transitioning to digital-first models, opening the doors to our bootcamp learners.

According to the Salesforce Index, the most important digital skills needed by businesses today

and over the next five years are those in collaboration technology like social media. Only 25% of participants rated themselves with a high skill level in collaboration technology skills explicitly needed for the workplace.

Understanding the ROI When Investing in Yourself

ROI or return on investment is a method for calculating the potential profit of an investment. Investing in yourself may seem daunting in the face of rising education costs and a 40-year high in inflation rates. However, consider the cost of not increasing your earning potential.

We’re already feeling the result of inflation with the increasing cost of living and education costs will only continue to rise. Now is the perfect time to invest in your future.

Investing in learning new skills with one of our bootcamps has the potential to generate significant returns in under a year. Benefits such as increased pay, job fulfillment and flexibility, and a better work-life balance are tough to value.

ROI Examples

The national average salary across all occupations is approximately $50,000. Someone currently earning $50,000 who invests $15,000 in acquiring Digital Marketing skills has the potential to earn $75,000 per year* as a Digital Marketing Specialist. That equates to a $10,000 ROI just in the first year!

According to the U.S. Bureau Of Labor Statistics, overall employment of advertising, promotions and marketing managers is projected to grow 10 percent from 2020 to 2030 due to the need to replace workers who transfer to different occupations or exit the labor force.

Let’s do another example! Someone earning below the national average, $40,000 annually, for example, may want to invest $16,000 in acquiring new skills to work in the cybersecurity industry. The median annual wage for information security analysts was $102,600 in May 2021*. That’s a potential $46,000 ROI!

According to the U.S. Bureau Of Labor Statistics, employment of information security analysts is projected to grow 33 percent from 2020 to 2030.

*Salaries vary based on a number of factors, including position, location, experience level, skills, as well as work and personal history.
